Gun Layaway: How It Works and What to Know First

Updated October 17, 2026 · By the team at Condition Red Tactical, Greenfield, IN

How does gun layaway work?

Layaway is a way to buy a gun without paying for it all at once and without taking on debt. The basic steps:

  1. Pick the gun and agree on the price.
  2. Make a down payment. The shop sets the gun aside for you.
  3. Make payments during the layaway period.
  4. When it’s paid off, come in, complete the paperwork and background check, and take it home.

The shop keeps the gun the whole time. You don’t take possession until the last step.

Does Condition Red Tactical offer layaway?

Yes. We offer 90-day layaway on firearms bought from CRT. Layaway applies to guns bought from us, not to transfers of guns bought elsewhere. For the down payment, payment schedule and cancellation terms, call us at (317) 967-7172 or stop by 866 S State St in Greenfield. You can also browse the shop.

When is the background check done on a layaway gun?

The background check that clears you to take the gun home has to be current when you pick it up. A NICS check can be relied on for only one transaction and for no more than 30 calendar days from when it was started (27 CFR 478.102). On a 90-day layaway, a check run on day one would expire before you finish paying.

What that means for you:

  • You must be legally able to receive the gun on the day you pick it up, not only on the day you started.
  • Bring valid ID with your current address at pickup. At our shop that’s an Indiana driver’s license or ID with your current address.
  • A background check can be delayed at pickup. See background check delays.

Who can use gun layaway?

Anyone who could buy the gun outright. The age limits apply: a licensed dealer can’t transfer a handgun to anyone under 21 or a rifle or shotgun to anyone under 18. You also have to be the actual buyer. Putting a gun on layaway for someone who’s paying you for it is a straw purchase, just like buying it outright for them. See gifting a gun and straw purchases.

Layaway vs. financing vs. buying online

Option How you pay When you get the gun
Layaway Payments to the shop over the layaway period After it’s paid off
Financing or credit Loan or card, which may charge interest Right away, after the paperwork
Buy online and transfer Pay the seller up front, plus a transfer fee After shipping and the transfer

Layaway suits people who want to budget and avoid borrowing. It’s not the fastest option.

Why people choose layaway

  • No borrowing. You pay with money you have, a piece at a time.
  • The gun is held for you. If a model is hard to find, layaway keeps it from being sold to someone else while you pay.
  • Time to prepare. The layaway period gives you time to take a class, pick a safe and plan how you’ll store the gun at home.

Plan for pickup day

Check the shop’s hours before you go. Ours are Tuesday and Wednesday noon to 6pm, Thursday 11:30am to 6pm, Friday 9:30am to 6pm and Saturday 11am to 7pm, and we’re closed Sunday and Monday. Bring your ID and your layaway receipt, and allow time for Form 4473 and the background check. Have a safe place to store the gun ready at home.

Questions to ask before starting a layaway

  • How much is the down payment?
  • How often do I need to make payments, and how can I pay?
  • What happens if I miss a payment or can’t finish in time?
  • Can I cancel, and is any part of my payments non-refundable?
  • What happens if I’m denied at pickup?
  • Is the price locked in once I start?

Get the answers in writing and keep your receipts.

Tips for a smooth layaway

  • Handle the gun and ask questions before you commit. Our choosing your first handgun guide can help.
  • Use the layaway period to set aside money for a holster, safe storage, ammo and training.
  • If you move, update your ID before pickup so your address matches.
  • Read Form 4473 explained so the paperwork goes quickly at pickup.

Common Questions

Does Condition Red Tactical do layaway?

Yes. CRT offers 90-day layaway on firearms bought from the shop. Call (317) 967-7172 for the payment terms.

Do I pass the background check when I start layaway or when I pick up?

The check has to be current at pickup. A NICS check can only be relied on for 30 calendar days, so on a longer layaway the check that clears you happens near the time you take the gun home.

Can I put a gun on layaway for someone else?

Only if it's a genuine gift paid with your own money for someone who can legally own it. If someone is paying you to get the gun for them, it's a straw purchase.

Can I use layaway on a gun I bought online?

CRT's layaway covers firearms bought from CRT. Guns bought elsewhere come in through an FFL transfer instead.
