What rifles are legal for deer in Indiana?
According to the DNR, a rifle must fire a centerfire cartridge with a bullet diameter of at least .219 inch (5.56 mm). That opens the door to common AR-15 calibers like .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO, as well as .243, .308, .350 Legend and similar rounds. Rifles are legal on both public and private land.
- No full metal jacket bullets. Use expanding hunting bullets.
- No more than 10 cartridges for each rifle you have with you while deer hunting.
Can you use an AR-15 with a 30-round magazine for deer?
You can use an AR-15 chambered in a legal caliber, but the 10-cartridge rule still applies. The DNR says a hunter may not possess more than 10 cartridges for each rifle while deer hunting, and that count includes what is in the magazine, in the chamber and in your pockets. The simplest way to stay legal is to use a 10-round magazine, or load fewer rounds, and leave the rest of your ammo at home or in the truck. Remember to use expanding hunting bullets, not the full metal jacket range ammo many people keep for their AR.
What handguns are legal for deer hunting?
- Barrel at least 4 inches long.
- Bullet diameter at least .234 inch.
- Case length at least 1.16 inches, except 10mm Auto and .40 S&W, which are allowed.
- The DNR specifically lists .25-20 Winchester, .30 Carbine and .38 Special among cartridges that are not allowed.
- The DNR notes handguns are not permitted for deer hunting on military areas.
Shotguns and muzzleloaders
Shotguns in 10, 12, 16, 20 or 28 gauge or .410 bore are legal with slugs or saboted bullets only. Rifle-shotgun combination guns are allowed. Muzzleloaders must be at least .40 caliber, shoot a bullet of at least .357 inch, and be loaded with a single bullet from the muzzle.
Can you hunt deer with a suppressor in Indiana?
Yes. The DNR says suppressors are legal for deer hunting as long as the hunter is in compliance with federal law. With the NFA tax now $0 and some buyers able to purchase on a Form 4473, more hunters are asking about this. See our guide on hunting with a suppressor in Indiana and our suppressors page.
Hunter orange and bag limits
The DNR requires hunter orange for all deer hunters during the youth, firearms and muzzleloader seasons, including while walking to and from your spot. Archery hunters who are out during those seasons must wear it too. A ground blind used then needs at least 144 square inches of hunter orange visible from every direction.
Statewide, you can take one antlered deer per year across the regular seasons. The statewide antlerless limit is six, but each county has its own cap. Check the DNR’s county bag limits before you go.
Pre-season checklist for your deer gun
A few weeks before opening day is the right time to make sure your rifle or shotgun is ready. Always start by unloading it, removing the magazine, and checking the chamber twice. Keep ammunition out of the room while you work.
- Clean the bore so you are zeroing a clean barrel. Our guide on how to clean a gun barrel covers the steps.
- Check scope rings and bases for tightness. Loose mounts are a common cause of shots that wander.
- Zero with the ammo you’ll hunt with. Different bullet weights hit in different places.
- Confirm your ammo is legal: expanding bullets, and no more than 10 rounds per rifle in the field.
If you’d rather have it done for you, we offer scope mounting and bore sighting for $35 (labor, plus 7% tax). Bore sighting gets you on paper; you still want to confirm zero at the range. We also do test fire and sight alignment for $20 plus ammo. See our gunsmithing services.
Season dates and rules come from the Indiana DNR and can change. Check the DNR website before you hunt. Last checked September 27, 2026.
