What to bring to an Indiana gun show

  • A valid Indiana driver’s license or state ID with your current address. A licensed dealer at a show needs it for the Form 4473, the same as in a store.
  • Your payment method. Some sellers take cards and some are cash only.
  • Unloaded guns only, if you bring one to sell, trade or have looked at. Many shows check guns at the door. Follow the show’s rules.
  • A list of what you want, including calibers and magazine models, so you are not guessing at a table.

Buying from a dealer vs. a private seller at a show

At a gun show you will find both licensed dealers and private sellers. When you buy from a licensed dealer, you fill out a Form 4473 and go through a background check, just like at a shop. Private sales between Indiana residents follow different rules. Our guides on private gun sales in Indiana and Form 4473 explain the differences.

If you buy from a private seller and want the peace of mind of running the sale through a licensed dealer, you can bring the gun to us for an FFL transfer. Our transfers, including private-party transfers, are $35 for the first firearm and $25 for each additional item in the same transfer.

Selling or trading a gun at a show

If you plan to sell or trade, a little prep helps you get a fair deal:

  • Clean the gun and make sure it is unloaded before you leave home.
  • Bring the original box, manual, extra magazines and any parts that came off it. Complete packages are easier to sell.
  • Know roughly what similar guns sell for, so you can judge offers.
  • Expect a licensed dealer to record the gun in their books when they buy or trade for it. That is normal.

If you’d rather not sell at a show, you can also talk to us at the shop about options.

Tips for checking a used gun at a show

  1. Ask the seller to show you it is unloaded, then check the chamber yourself.
  2. Look down the bore with a light for rust, pitting or bulges.
  3. Check for cracks in the frame or stock and wear on the slide rails.
  4. Work the action, safety and magazine release.
  5. Ask whether it has been modified, and ask for any parts that came off it.

If you buy something and want a second set of eyes, we offer cleaning and inspections (price depends on condition) and test fire and sight alignment for $20 plus ammo. See our gunsmithing services.

Hunting season timing

Indiana’s firearms deer season runs November 14 to 29, 2026, which overlaps the Crown Point, Richmond and late-November Indianapolis shows. If you pick up a new deer rifle in October, you have time to get it mounted and zeroed. We do scope mounting and bore sighting for $35. See our guide to hunting with a suppressor in Indiana if you’re thinking about adding one.
